May be offline for a few days - just in case I am...

Posted on Dec 25th, 2008 by Gemstar : Star-Child Gemstar

I am probably going to be offline for a few days - I managed to all but rip the end off my left index finger at Christmas Dinner tonight - broke the tip of the bone right off and ripped the nail off.  A trip to the hospital tonight to get it set and 10 stiches to re-attach the end of the finger - now I am home - the freezing is coming out - I am sort of hen-pecking to type this - and hoping that the major pain killer prescription they provided kicks in soon.

So, it all depends on how well I'm dealing with the pain - I used a lot of self-hypnosis to get through before they froze it in order to reset it and stitch it together, and I'll be using quite a bit I expect to hasten healing and help keep the pain down probably.  I'm on Oxycoten - so I'm probably going to be flying high for a few days.

Hope you had a nice Christmas - mine was good until just sitting down for dessert.  When I went to pull the chair in closer to the table, the seat came off the base, and my finger tip wedged under the seat and the base of the chair.  Naturally, when I felt the pain, I jerked my hand out, and heard a crunch. So I was left with everything just above the nail hanging down attached by a bit of flesh on the bottom of the finger.  OUCH!!!  Guess I won't be playing piano for a while.  Maybe now they'll fix the damned chair!!!

Thanks, Claudia, and yes, all healing light is very welcomed. After one and a half pain pills, I’ve decided that I don’t need anything that strong (and terribly nauseating)- my son is going to pick up some Tylenol for me, and I’m using some hypnosis for pain relief and healing. It’s mainly the healing needed now. I will probably lose the nail for life - I’m told I’ll need plastic surgery to make the finger more normal looking. Funny, but I’ve already adapted to typing without it, pretty much. I don’t think it’s going to be that simple for the piano playing part though. Right now the finger is fully encased in gauze, and that is being supported by a full finger aluminum splint. I will have a few challenges around doing stuff with water (bathing, dishes, hair washing) for a couple of weeks - I’ll figure it out, I’m sure. ;)

So I guess, I’m a tough old bird, and this isn’t going to keep me down for long.

Hugs, ~ ~ ~^v^~ ~ ~

Ouch, oooooooooooch!  yikes!  I am wincing just reading this.  I know how painful a finger injury can be - I had part of an infected fingernail removed and the pain was so intense.  Just can’t imagine the pain you must feel with this major injury.  It’s amazing how much damage can be done by everyday objects - just the wrong juxtaposition for just a second.  I have no idea how you are even typing.  Hopefully, you will get some good pain reliever that won’t make you barf.
You will have to be very resourceful trying to keep that finger safe.
(((hugs))) and lots of love

Hi Mimi: Well, it’s a bit sore, but I’m managing. The splint and bandage are keeping it from getting banged around. I still don’t have any feeling in the part that was almost pulled off - just feeling above that. The part that broke off was from the tip to half way up to the knuckle. I’m hoping feeling will eventually return to the rest of the finger, otherwise playing piano might be challenging - I play by touch, not by looking at my hands. I’m only taking Tylenol regular strength when needed now - I just can’t take that other stuff. I have a lot of good people sending me healing, so I’m sure it will heal up properly. Thanks for your hugs and love.

Hugs back!!! ~~~^v^~~~

Ouch, ow; I remember a glass breaking right before New Years Eve; a bunch of fingers were slashed. another time, I caught my thumb in a cab door, thank goodness the cab did not take off right away. I was late for work and hurrying-I had to sit and wait in the nurse’s office, they said I was lucky I did not lose it.

I hope your finger gets better, soon. The things we managed to do to ourselves!

Thanks Lisha, Hummingbird and Cindy for your love and healing thoughts.

Although it occasionally hurts a bit, I have now taken myself off pain meds except for sleeping. I can pretty much keep things tolerable with hypnosis. I am going to the doc’s today to get the dressing changed. It is itching occasionally, so I’m thinking that is a good sign. Yesterday I still had no feeling in the sides of the finger, but this morning I noticed that I could at least feel light pressure (not wanting to push in too hard), so that is a good sign that the nerves are starting to re-attach or grow in new - having a lack of sensation would be a problem, so I’m actually welcoming a bit of discomfort in those areas. With the great amount of healing energy being sent from around the world, I’m sure my healing will be swift and complete.

Love to you all… ~~~^v^~~~

Update: I had the bandage/dressing changed today - the doctor was amazed at how good it looked (said it appeared more like 4 or 5 days healing, not just two) - he’s thinking stitches to come out by mid-week, not next weekend. Also, while I had the bandage off, I carefully pushed all around the sides and the end of the finger with a folded piece of gauze - and I did have “feeling” in those areas - some more than others, but at this stage, I’m happy for any amount. Anyways, I’m very pleased with the progress, and wanted to share that with everyone. ~ ~ ~^v^~ ~ ~

Well, I’ve kept my wicked sense of humour, my friends, so if you’ve clicked back in, you can see me “giving the finger” in the photo I added…. it’s a bit blurry, but hey, I could only use one hand to hold the camera and take the pic!!!
