Jeff Healey "Roadhouse" R.I.P.

Posted on Mar 2nd, 2008 by Gemstar : Star-Child Gemstar

It is with great sadness that I spread the news here that we, especially Canadians, but the world as well, have lost a great all-round musician today.  Jeff Healey, of the movie "Roadhouse" fame (with Patrick Swayze, also of "Dirty Dancing" fame), as well as having played with numerous top musicians over the last two decades, passed away in Toronto today, losing his final battle to cancer, which he had been battling on and off for most of his life.  He was only 41, and had a wife and two children, who were by his bedside when he passed away.

Jeff was blinded by a form of cancer in his eyes very early in life.  At the tender age of three, he picked up a guitar, and because of his blindness, invented a way to play guitar with it on his lap, but you'll also see from this clip, that he didn't stop there.  An accomplished, musician he played several instruments, and his tastes in music performance ranged from good old rock 'n roll to jazz.  Just a little over a year ago, he opened "Jeff Healey's Roadhouse" in downtown Toronto, and was just about to release a new album, with a tour planned to go with it.  He insisted that he would just go until he couldn't any longer, and lived his life huge, never letting his blindness be a handicap for him.

This selection is "When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky", played in the movie "Roadhouse", and written by Bob Dylan.  Jeff Healey, our thoughts and prayers are with your family tonight. Thank you for the music.  R.I.P.

Thank you Helen…….
I'm generally not one to get all blubbery about celebrites, but this young man is exactly the same age as my son, and it really touched me that he would go through so much, and still have the kind of energy and drive he displayed when he performed.  His new album was due out on March 20th, so I'm hoping they still put it out - it's called “A Whole Mess of Jazz”, because over the last few years he switched over more to Jazz, and he was the night-host for “Toronto Jazz” radio until a few days before his final hospital stay - they aired his final pre-recorded show tonight - and he hinted, ever so slightly, that it was his last, although you could hear in his voice that he wanted to carry on doing this for much longer.  He played a mean sax, too!  ~ :-) ~………
